Fox adds JUCO shooting guard

JUCO guard Sherrard Brantley plans on being a Bulldog next season

I loved watching Ricky McPhee play last season, and I will miss seeing him on the court next year – his timely three’s and relentless effort will be difficult for Mark Fox to replace.

However, that being said, Fox may have found a potential substitute – 6’2″ shooting guard Sherrard Brantley of Northwest Florida Community College.

According to Brantley’s latest Facebook status update (is this what recruiting is evolving into?) Brantley stated, “just committed to University of Georgia.  happy to finally get done with this stuff. thanks to everybody who keeping up with me.”

Sounds like the Dublin, Georgia native is going to be a Dawg next season.  Brantley chose Georgia over LSU and Creighton.

At NWFCC last season, Brantley averaged 13.7 points and shot a blistering 43% from beyond the arc.  He was named to the Panhandle Conference media’s All-Freshman team – he received more votes than any other Frosh.

At Dublin High School, Brantley led his team to the Class 2A state championship his senior season.

At this point (like Donte Williams), Sherrard has committed but not yet signed – I think it’s a solid verbal.

From what I have read about this kid, it appears that he is a more athletic (see the picture above) version of Ricky McPhee.  His coach at NWFCC, Bruce Stewart, deemed him the “best catch-and-shoot shooter in the country”.

Note

Former Southern Cal basketball recruit Dwayne Polee, Jr. is supposed to announce in “early April” where he will sign for next season.  According to an article published in the LA Times, Polee stated that UNLV, New Mexico and Georgia are recruiting him the hardest.

Polee’s father, Dwayne Sr., played for UNLV in the 80′s under Jerry Tarkanian.

Travis Leslie is the Hoop Dawg’s “Player of the Week”

with 2 comments

Travis Leslie averaged 14.0 pts & 8.0 rebounds last week in games against St. Louis and Virginia Tech, thus earning him the prestigious “Hoop Dawg Player of the Week” award (Travis has not been notified yet, but the hardware is in the  mail).

He is actually ranking second on the team in both of those categories behind Trey Thompkins…however, Leslie is a 6’4″ guard so the fact that he is averaging 6.0 reb/game is very solid (although having a 45″ vertical certainly helps).

Leslie has established himself as a scorer this year, and is really doing a great job of attacking the rim.  He is also shooting a John Stockton-like 82.1% from the free throw line (up from 57.5% last year).

He had 2 monster dunks (one a tomahawk & the other an alley-oop) against Virginia Tech and is quietly building a case for the nickname, “Human Highlight Film, Jr”.
