Hoop Dawgs send Maroon Dogs Home

This is Decatur Dawg staying up late to blog a big win.

Georgia’s two All SEC (2nd team) members, JJ Frazier and Yante Maten, led the Hoop Dawgs to a 79-69 win over Missy St. in the first round of the SEC Tournament.  JJ finished with 28 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 8-8 free throws; while Maten posted 20 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks.    .

The Dawgs came out playing aggressively on offense with Maten, Mann and Ogbeide taking it strong to the basket for buckets in the early minutes.  Maten executed a sweet spin move away from a double team for a left-handed hook that tied the game at 17 at the 11:00 mark.  JJ Frasier then got hot and Maten even made a 3 pointer before halftime as the Dawgs went to the break with a 42-34 lead.

JJ Frasier opened the second half on fire with two threes.  Then a JJ assist to Maten on a break that started with Maten’s block put Georgia up by 16, 57-41, with 15 minutes left.

From that point the Dawgs lost some focus and were flustered by the Maroon’s pressure defense.  Missy State slowly got back in the game as Georgia struggled through a 6 plus minute stretch without a field goal.  Georgia’s lead was down to 4, 72-68, at the 4 minute timeout.

Georgia effectively kept Maten out of foul trouble by playing zone defense for most of the game.  Down the stretch, the Dawgs switched to man defense and held State to just one point over the final 4 minutes while blocking several shots to hold on for the 10 point win.

The “good Dawgs” made a sustained appearance for about 20 minutes in the middle of the game.  Time to get some rest for South Carolina in tomorrow’s nightcap.  The Gamecocks will have plenty of motivation, but so will the Dawgs.

  1. Dawgs weathered a bad stretch in the second half and still pulled out a big W. Think we’ll need big contributions/minutes from Ogbeide/Edwards to sustain a tourney run. Go Dawgs

  2. Nice report Decatur Dawg for a late game! I have to admit, I almost packed it in during the cold spell in the 2nd half! Dawgs held it together and notched a tourney win for the “G”! There were some nice contributions from the bench last night! The Big ‘O” is starting to have a real presence on the court! Michael Edwards drew rave comments for his “Spin” move in the 2nd half!! The Fox Formula may have the Dawgs hitting on all cylinders at just the right time!

  3. South Carolina favored by 2.5. If Carrera shoots the ball like he did in Columbia and Maten stays out of foul trouble, Georgia will be in the semifinals. Go Dawgs!

  4. Thought the Dawgs were going to run away with this one, but I then I saw Kessler and Geno on the floor for a long stretch in the second half. I guess Fox wanted to make things interesting.
Gaines shot 2 for 14. That has to get better against SC.
Still, a win is an win. It’s time to beat those ‘cocks!

    1. Having Kessler and KPG on the court at the same time is a recipe for offensive stagnation; I’m not sure how Fox ever lets that combination happen. Maybe he felt a little bad for the Maroon Dawgs?

  5. All the worst of the Fox(y) Dawgs displayed in a win. Great grit to gather themselves and pull it out. Maybe the Disappearing Dawgs act can be limited to three our four minutes, instead of six, against better competition tonight.

  6. It’s tough to beat a team three times in one season, especially a team coached by someone like Frank Martin. We have not seen the best of Michael Carrera this year. So I’m nervous. Still, we match better with the Gamecocks than any other of the top seeds, so I like our draw. If we can play our usual good defense and make this an ugly game, we have a good shot.
